The upstart Sonoma County Sol of the NPSL gave Portland a game for 87 minutes, but eventually wound up on the wrong side of the 3-0 score line, sending the USL-1 Timbers to a eagerly anticipated match against the Seattle Sounders F.C. in the third round.

Portland opened the scoring in the 7th minute, when George Josten beat Sol goalkeeper Juan Sosa for the early 1-0 lead. The game Sol held the Timbers to the lone goal until the Mandjou Keita scored twice in the final three minutes, both off assists from Brian Farber.

Portland will host the Seattle Sounders F.C. at PGE Park next Wednesday. As USL-1 rivals, the teams split their two Open Cup matches with each other, and Seattle held an 11-16-5 advantage over the Timbers in league play
