SANTA CLARA, Calif.
The Quakes continued to prepare for a return to MLS action with a scrimmage against the Sonoma County Sol on Friday at the Nutrilite Training Facility. Ryan Johnson and Arturo Alvarez scored to lift the Quakes past the National Premier Soccer League side.
San Jose tried a new lineup in the first half with Jason Hernandez slotted at right back, Bobby Burling and Ike Opara at center back and Ramiro Corrales at right back. Steven Beitashour moved up to right midfield with Brandon McDonald and a trialist in the middle, Bobby Convey on the opposite flank. Ryan Johnson paired with Chris Wondolowski up top.
Arturo Alvarez, Brad Ring, Javier Robles and Chris Leitch also saw action in the second half.
Sol Addition: Sol came close to cutting the lead in half with an Eric Lafon goal on MLS veteran Joe Cannon, only to see if eventually called offsides.
When asked about his offsides goal, Lafon had this to say:
“Can’t say much about the goal other than the ref making an apparent ghost call. Like Edu and the rest of US National Team, I feel completely robbed of my goal.”
Sol head coach Benjamin Ziemer had this to say:
“The team has really come together lately and having played two quality matches in a row, we have now played against the best and will be going into the rest of the season with a ton of confidence. Our goal is to win out the remaining games and gain a playoff spot.”

The Sonoma County Sol qualified for the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating the Los Gatos Storm 3-0 on May 22 and then faced the 2011 MLS Future Expansion Side Portland Timbers on June 15th only to see their 2010 US Open Cup run end with a 3-0 defeat.
Sol having faced two professional clubs will now have a lot of confidence going into the end of the NPSL season despite accumulating back-to-back losses. The team is currently sitting in 5th place, one point behind the 4th place side SD Boca FC. With only three games remaining, Sol must earn the remaining nine points in order to guarantee a playoff spot in the NPSL post season.
