The Sonoma County Sol prepare for battle this weekend as the team leaves Thursday for Scottsdale, Arizona to qualify for the prestigious 96th Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The Sol will be one of eight qualified squads competing to move on to the next round. The Sol has the chance to play against professional teams in the later rounds of the tournament. In the 2008 qualification round, the Sol had gone undefeated through the weekend with two wins and one tie only to see their hopes of moving on crushed because of goal differential with the Arizona Sahuaros. With three shutouts, the team was still unable to move on. With plenty of returners from last year’s squad along with some newcomers, the Sol look to prevent this from happening again this year. Not only will the Sol qualify for next round of the Open Cup if victorious, they will also qualify for the USASA National Amateur Finals held in early August.
